I’ve had mine for about 3 mos. now. I love it and so do my kids. My 9 year old daughter and 4 year old son are easy to put on and ride around Portland. I put an old bontrager 25.4 stem and mustache bar so that both of them have something to hold on to. I commute up the hill to OHSU on it, put tons of stuff in it. I did buy the extra bag so as to balance loads. I hate having one side bulging out. I can carry 4 full bags of groceries, in addition to my little ones. The only thing I can say I DON’T like is that when you are off the bike, there is so much weight at the back it makes for a very akward time. That being said, I haven’t driven my pick-up for about 3 months now and had to jump start it to drive to the dump. I’m in the process of building some accessories for it. I’ve also noticed how light and nimble my road bike feels after riding this to work. Smiles all around.

The local bike shop – Sellwood Cycle Repair – where I purchased the Ute, ordered an extra deck for me. I’d ask your local Kona dealer. Congrats on the new bike!

Matt,
I’ve been loving my ute for a week now. Gotten in a number of rides and commutes to work. I’m still debating the 2nd bag, not necessarily for capacity but for balance and symmetry. I love your child seat and will probably do something similar for mine. Where did you get the 2nd deck? Directly from kona?

Go for it. I did, and love it. I bought an extra wood deck with my Ute. I securely mounted the child seat to one deck. When I want to ride with the kid, I simply swap decks. Much easier than bolting the child seat on and off.

I would hold off on a second bag. The single bag holds more than you could possibly need to carry. I considered a second bag, but after riding the Ute for just over two months, I don’t think I will.

I looked into the Madsen, but like the Kona a bit more. The bucket is just a bit too wide for every day use I think. The Kona seems like it would be a better every day fit for me rather than being a bit better for carrying the kid around but a bit odd for everyday.

I like the idea of the joe-bike but once again, it’s just a bit too oddball for me for everyday use. I hate getting hundreds of questions every day.

Awesome! Have you considered the Madsen Bucket Bike or a Joe-Bike Box Bike? These are great for general utility purposes as well as hauling the kids around without need for a trailer.
